No question Novak Djokovic would have won the 2022 Australian Open

1997 US Open finalist Greg Rusedski has no doubt that Novak Djokovic would have won this year’s Australian Open if he was allowed to compete at Melbourne Park. Djokovic, 35, is a record nine-time Australian Open champion and he was hoping to win a fourth consecutive Australian Open title in 2022.

But instead of celebrating another triumph at the Australian Open, Djokovic was deported from Australia – something that took him months to mentally recover from. In the absence of Djokovic, Rafael Nadal made it all the way at the Australian Open.

Rusedski: No question Djokovic would have won the Australian Open

“No question about it. He would’ve won it this year if he was allowed to play. He’s won it nine times, that’s his best Slam. There’s no question about it.

Djokovic is just a step up, he’s just a world class player, he’s got all the assets, he’s got everything you need,” Rusedski said on Amazon Prime Video, as quoted on Sportskeeda. Last week, Djokovic was informed by the Australian government that his three-year ban from entering the country was rescinded.

With that being said, Djokovic is allowed to return to Australia in January and compete for a record 10th Australian Open title. “In terms of your next question related to Australia, yes I received the news yesterday morning and I was very, very happy to hear that news.

It has been a tough year with everything that happened, obviously, in Australia for me and for the people who are close in my life. This came as a great new year present, I think, and I am looking forward to going to Australia and hopefully having another successful Australian Open, which has historically been my most successful Grand Slam.

I had some of my best memories on that court. Hopefully, I can make more positive memories there,” Djokovic told Eurosport last week. It remains to be seen if Djokovic can win his 22nd Grand Slam at the Australian Open.
